The Role

We are currently offering an internship for a student hydrogeologist to join our team for a 3 to 6 month period, commencing September 2025.

The normal working location will be in an office in Totnes, Devon.

Ideally, up to half of the internship would be spent working abroad on one of our field projects.

Duties would include, but are not limited to:

Provide technical support to organisations who have requested Groundwater Relief’s services (including drafting desk studies, using remote sensing data and other information to create GIS maps, analysis of hydrogeological data);
Provide in-country field support to organisations as part of a team; works may include borehole siting, drilling supervision, pumping test supervision, groundwater monitoring and borehole rehabilitation;
Support the engagement of Groundwater Relief members on projects;
Carry out ad-hoc administrative tasks;
Research and explore opportunities that will help Groundwater Relief meet its objectives as a charity.

Benefits

The internship is a voluntary position. However, Groundwater Relief will provide a generous stipend to support living costs in Totnes, Devon. Groundwater Relief also provides a stipend and covers the costs of travel, accommodation and expenses, as per our expenses policy, when the intern is engaged in overseas work.

Interns will also have a unique opportunity to get first-hand experience working in a humanitarian and development context supporting a range of different organisations and working with expert members of Groundwater Relief who have a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Your Profile

We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate:

A student hydrogeology/geophysics/geochemist studying for a Masters in Science (MSc) degree or related qualifications;
Clear technical competencies that will be an asset to Groundwater Relief’s work;
A commitment to supporting humanitarian and development work;
A desire to travel and work in difficult circumstances;
A self-starter mentality with a willingness to take on responsibility;
A creative and practical problem solver, who will get jobs completed without fuss;
Positive mind set that will inspire other Groundwater Relief staff and members;
The ability to communicate in French or Arabic would be advantageous but is not essential.
