Help to safeguard the future of our soils and join the leading UK society for soil scientists.

The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) is an established international membership organisation committed to the study of soil in its widest aspects. The Society brings together those working within academia, practitioners implementing soil science in industry and all those working with, or with an interest in soils. We promote research and education, both academically and in practice, and build collaborative partnerships to help safeguard our soil for the future.

We are looking for an ambitious, pro-active individual to join the operations team as we continue to lead the way in soil science at the forefront of the sector.

About the Role

This role is concerned with performing business development duties for the British Society of Soil Science.

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will be an experienced professional responsible for managing the day-to-day delivery of the Society’s sponsorship and member acquisition strategy. You will be accountable for the achieving revenue targets, against agreed operational policies and procedures. Identifying gaps in service and information and where appropriate, implementing new operating procedures, you will be an excellent communicator, influencing staff, stakeholders and activities to ensure the Society’s short and long-term strategy is achieved. You will also be responsible for the overall member acquisition and sponsor revenue targets.

There will be a requirement to plan and organise individual and/or team activity, to manage, integrate and co-ordinate work on behalf of the Society. Being the face of the society to prospective partners and members, you will work closely with the Executive Director to agree annual sales targets and annual budgets in relation to your area of expertise.

About You

Educated to degree level or equivalent you will be an experienced Business Development professional, working collaboratively with sponsors and partners to deliver joint projects and aims.

Passionate about the natural environment you will create engaging presentations to acquire new partners, sponsors and hit departmental targets.

We are looking for someone with a proven track record of creating and identifying opportunities to hit targets whilst working with internal and external stakeholders in the development of sponsor offers, competitions, corporate partners and grant funding opportunities.

You must have the ability to interpret, analyse and present information in a clear and concise manner coupled with strong interpersonal and influencing skills.

The ideal person will also have a successful track record in winning grant applications and knowledge of best practice in recruiting members and sponsors in a charity or not for profit context.

The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) was founded in 1947 by eminent British soil scientists with the aims of advancing the study of soil; being open to membership from all those with an interest in the study and uses of soil; and issuing an annual publication.

Nowadays BSSS is an established international membership organisation and charity committed to the study of soil in its widest aspects. With over 900 members, it is funded primarily through income from publications and subscriptions. The Society acts as a forum for the exchange of ideas and provides a framework for representing the views of soil scientists to other organisations and decision-making bodies. It promotes research by organising several events and conferences each year and by the publication of its two scientific journals, the European Journal of Soil Science (EJSS), and Soil Use and Management (SUM), in partnership with Wiley. It promotes education through a number of initiatives aimed at schools, colleges and universities. The Society has a regular and varied programme of scientific conferences on a wide range of soil-related issues and hosted the World Congress of Soil Science in 2022, Glasgow on behalf of the International Union of Soil Sciences.
